GK-2A – Videos

GK-2A is capturing infra red disk images of the earth every 10 minutes, with these being shown on the latest images page. In addition, there are processed versions including Sanchez processing which shows the infra red image projected onto a colour image of the earth.

Going one step further, these can be animated to create short videos, which I have done using ffmpeg to create videos showing the last 24 hours of capture.

Animated Infra Red – Last 24 Hours

Although technically this is to display the last 143 image captured, which if there has been some outage for the capture system this could be a bit longer than 24 hours.

As to 143 images for 24 hours, those with a good mathematical brain will figure out that there is an image missing since 24 hours of 6 images an hour should be 144 images.

Looking through the schedule for image downloads, there is a gap at 15:30 GMT each day where there is a frame missed as the satellite is in the middle of downloading another set of images.

This is a slightly unusual design which will cause some fun and games with some image analysis, so I’m surprised at the design decision.

In the meantime, enjoy these videos. They are best viewed by putting the video player into full screen mode using the [] like control at the bottom right of the video player.

I didn’t make them loop so you could clearly see the progression of the last 24 hours, with the final frame being the one captured in the last few minutes.

Note that the videos below are the very latest 24 hour period.
