Why So Cold Overnight

It was a freezing cold night over most of the country and this can be seen from the early morning NOAA 19 pass.

Looking closely at the temperature scale, it is clear that the majority of the country got close to or below zero overnight, with this NOAA 19 pass from 5:33am.

As to why so cold, this is clearly identifiable from the enhanced infra red image which shows the whole of NZ being just about cloud free overnight, with less heat trapped as we’d experienced over the last few days when there was extensive cloud cover.

You’ll also notice that the image quality problems we’ve had for the last 36 hours have now been resolved. This seems to have been a result of the bad weather blowing rain into the QFH satellite antenna.
